SKN National Cycling Championships - By Greg Phillip

The St. Kitts & Nevis National Road Cycling Championships was held on last weekend with a time trial on Saturday June 23rd and a road race on Sunday June 24th.  It was with pleasure that a team from St. Maarten was welcomed to participate.  Among the St. Maarten team was Patricio “Blade” Carty a cyclist with Nevis Heritage and hence eligible to win the St. Kitts & Nevis National Championship.

The Time Trial covered 20 Km over one lap between Newcastle and Pinneys on Nevis.  Despite a stiff wind and a solid challenges by a formidable field, Reginald Douglas managed to win the adult male National time trial Championship. The best finish among the St. Maarten team was third by Steve Catalan.  Patricio Carty and Bienvenido Carti were fourth and fifth respectively, all behind Nevis’ James Weekes who was second.  The youth time trial Championships was won by Assim Chapman of Nevis.

The road race on Sunday covered a distance of 80 Km and set the stage for another epic battle between St. Maarten and St. Kitts Nevis.  In a major show of strength 16 year old Assim Chapman emerged as the overall Champion beating Patricio Carty by a bike length in a sprint at the end.  Reginald Douglas was third, one and a half minutes behind after falling casualty to a stinging attack by Patricio on one of the final climbs on the way to the finish.  The results were then, Assim Chapman winning the youth road race national title and Patricio “Blade” Carty winning the Adult Male National Championship.

There was also a female race with Sarah Peter-Mears of Nevis winning the championship there.

The St. Kitts Nevis Cycling Federation Congratulates all the participants and champions.  The next cycling event in St. Kitts Nevis is the three stage Independence Road Race  on August 11th and 12th 2012.  The defending champion from 2011 is Barbados.   In addition to cyclist from St. Kitts & Nevis, Antigua, Anguilla and St. Maarten are expected to be represented.
