Nevis to Host its First Half Marathon
Charlestown, November, 2011–Another major annual international sporting event will take root in Nevis come January 29, 2012, when Nevis will host its first Half Marathon.
Event SKN, a local entity that creates, organizes, promotes and hosts sporting events will present this new addition to the calendar of sport tourism events. The race is expected to attract the top distance runners in the region in its first year, and the goal is to grow it into one of the major half marathons in the Caribbean.
Organized by Event SKN in collaboration with the Triathlon Federation of St Kitts & Nevis the event will also include a 10km and a 5km distance race for the more casual running/walking enthusiasts and younger athletes. Part of the race proceeds will be donated to DASKN the diabetes society to help raise awareness of health and fitness, also to the islands newly formed ‘Over The Top’ track & field club formed and coached by former Olympian Kurvin Wallace.
The races will start in Charlestown with out and back courses for all three distances, the 5km runners will turn around close to TDC, the 10km runners will turn at Cotton Ground and the ½ marathoners will head out past the airport to the Village of Newcastle before making the return to finish back In town. The current main sponsors are Wheel World Cycle Shop and GMP Graphics & Printing of Nevis but the event is sure to raise more interest from the business community as we get closer to the race date, interested sponsors can contact Winston on 664 2843 or Greg on 662 3975.
