SKN Riders Attend Caribbean Youth Championships

For the very first time, two young riders will represent St Kitts & Nevis at the 2010 Caribbean Youth Cycling Championships which is being hosted by Aruba.

The 2010 SKN male and female youth champions Assim Chapman and Sasha Lloyd flew down to Aruba escorted by National Champion Reggie Douglas, who has been mentoring and training these two youngsters during their build up to this event.

The two riders are a product of a concerted effort by the SKN Cycling Federation to develop and offer opportunities to young athletes in the federation, with regular cycling training sessions and races to hone their burgeoning talents.

The 5th Annual Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships will consist of a Time trial – 18 kilometers for all categories. Road Race – 50 kilometers for Girls 15-18, 60 kilometers for Juvenile (Boys) 15-16, 80 kilometers for Junior (Boys) 17-18. There is also a team competition for the country with the best combined results in all categories and both disciplines.

14 countries will be represented by 79 riders at the event, including the traditionally strong cycling federations of Puerto Rico, Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados, Jamaica and Curacao.

Saturday, August 7 will be an 18 kilometer time trial along a fairly flat course. Sunday’s road race course is slightly hilly and will be laps of a 10 kilometer circuit. The Juvenile Boys (15-16) will do 6 laps, and the Girls (15-18) will race 5 laps.
