Reggie Wins GMP Mini-Triathlon

GMP Graphics & Printing sponsored the final event for the Nevis Tourism Week celebrations, a mini triathlon was the order of the day and despite a rough sea state that threatened the race the athletes acquitted themselves well on the shortened swim course.

The big surprise of the day was the domination in the swim by first time triathlete Tim Hoffman, who was the first out of the water in a time of 3:47, outdistancing 2nd placed Alex Isles and 3rd Reggie, but the beauty of triathlon is that not over till its over.

In and out of the transition area that was set up near the Lime bar on Pinneys beach, Alex and Reggie showed their experience, with Alex being first out on the bke course, most of the athletes choosing to use their mountain bikes to cope with the rough path leading to the main island road.

The bike course took the riders left past the Four Seasons swinging off the main road once past the St Thomas Church and around through Barnes Ghaut returning down through Cotton Ground and back to Pinneys Beach.

It was not a huge shock to see Reggie returning off the bike in 1st place, he set a blistering pace to post the fastest bike time of the day of 16:21, he was followed in by Alex and a hard charging James Weekes, obviously rusty after his return from freezing cold England.  Into the 2nd transition they all came, prepping themselves for the run course that circled out and around to Pinneys Beach Hotel and then along the sand to the finish, Reggie was way out in front by this time and cruised in to first place in a time of 31:14, in 2nd place was James who had overtaken Alex on the run who took 3rd. Tim meanwhile was continuing his fine form beating new TNCTC president Matt Lloyd on the bike but Matt hung tough to overhaul Tim for 4th.

Special mention to the only female athlete entered in the race Rachel Harms, visiting from the USA, who finished in a time of 47:26, the Masters category was won by age group standout Gordon ‘Doc’ Avery in 55:04, the only youth to compete in the Duathlon section (No Swim) was Kurtis Huggins who completed his bike and Run in a time of 42:27, well done!!

The TNCTC wishes to thank GMP Graphics & Printing for their sponsorship of this first event, the Tourism Dept. for inviting us to be part of the week of celebrations, and the Nevis police dept for the much appreciated road safety control.

The next event on the club calendar is the 3rd annual Brick Kiln Classic road bike race, to be held this coming Saturday at 3.30pm starting in the village of Brick kiln, for more information contact Greg Phillip 662 3975 or Matt Lloyd 667 7776
