Reggie Rules As Cycle Race Season Begins

The 2010 race season started on the 2nd Jan as the members of the Nevis Cycle & Triathlon Club took to the roads of Nevis for a 3 lap, 38km road bike race.

2009 National Champion Reggie Douglas was clearly the man to beat, but James Weekes has been showing great form of late, also in the mix was up-and-comer Assim Chapman, only 14 yrs old but already testing the legs of more seasoned campaigners, and Monica Ceccon was on hand to fly the flag for female Elite riders

The course was set between Cattle long path and the Anglican Church, and from the gun it was clear that no-one was taking it easy after the long break, it was also clear who the main players were going to be, Reggie, james, Assim, Monica, Alex Isles (a welcome return after a long lay off) and Shaun Brear were setting the pace, everyone else was playing catch-up.

The race was fast and competitive, with breaks and attacks coming thick and fast, but it was at the turnaround for the last lap that the gaps really established themselves, Shaun was dropped after a gutsy ride with the leading pack, with Monica and Assim just losing touch at the Church, but they gamely fought back to Reggie and james to contest for the sprint.

In the final outcome Reggie and James duked it out for the top spot, with Reggie taking the win in the sprint for the line, in third was young Assim and Monica took 4th. Special mention to newcomer Edion Gumbs (14yrs) who finished in great style.

The NCTC is looking forward to a great season of races, which are on display on the club website
