Nevis to St Kitts Cross-Channel Swim 2009
Bente Weber Memorial
Sunday 29th March 7.00 am at Oualie Beach Bay, 59 swimmers, 28 kayakers and various support boat staff gathered to take on this Channel Crossing challenge, now in its 7th year and assisted by new sponsors in the shape of Ocean’s Edge and Scuba Safari’s.
Teams from Tortola and Antigua joined visiting swimmers from St Martin, St Croix, and the USA, with a large contingent coming from Ross university in St Kitts including the Dean himself David De Young. The weather had been very stormy in the week leading up to the swim, but the sea calmed down enough to allow for safe but very challenging swimming.
For many of he athletes the channel swim is a personal challenge, one such person is Sarah Williams, as Sarah only began swimming 4 years ago, who has to be hugely commended for slaying her biggest monster, The Open Ocean, , congratulations to Sarah and all the other ‘Challenge’ athletes, who just wanted to ‘Do it’
Top finishing honors were again taken by the women who have dominated this event for the last 2 years, with Megan Jacobi (USA?Ross) completing the crossing in 1:14:10 a fabulous time in the difficult conditions, followed by Victoria Bezemer of Tortola and Laura Axiak (USA/Ross). The top male finisher was Roger Brown (USA/Ross) with a time of 1:15:34, he was followed by Elliot Steer (Tortola) and Kareem Valentine (Antigua) one of the team of 9 athletes from Antigua that included the events youngest ever entrants who were 8 and 11 yrs old.
Special thanks to the all Kaykers, Richie Lupinacci, Miles, and the Scuba Safari’s gang for their diligence, James and Greg for timing, Eileen and Tom, Sarah, David and Paula for Registration/Marking.
