Cable & Wireless Independence Day Road Race
It was another beautiful day on Nevis for the first of what we hope will become an annual road bike race, sponsored by Cable & Wireless, September 17th, Independance Day. Ten riders took to the start line on the bay front road for the three lap, 57mile course, which also included a sprint stage. Guest riders from Anguilla, Grenada and St Maarten joined Reggie, James, keith, Everet, Royston and newcomer Thynel Martin from the Nevis Cycle Club. First casualty on the course was Everet, who punctured one the first lap (he is plagued by them) and after a wheel change tried to catch up the pack but to no avail, Jack Bruno (Grenada) setting the pace at the front, the sprint prize was taken by Nigel Walwyn (Anguilla). Jack held the front untill the last lap when both he and Reggie started to get cramps, Reggie has by now learnt how to suffer so when it came to the final sprnt finish he took fourth. The police had not only been leading the group of riders but also closed off Hunkins drive to allopw full access for the riders for what was a spectators bonus, watching the final sprint off, first place was taken by Jean Benjamin (St Martin) riding a very tactical race, second was Royston, proving his strength in the finish, with James Weeks in third. Both James and Thynel had run the National Heroes Day 10km the day before, with James taking second and Thynel third in their age groups, so it was a really fantastic effort to do so well in the bike race as well. Thynel in his first serious bike race came in eigth, staying with the more experienced riders right to the sprint, Keith jones gets a mention as the team work horse, riding a totally selfless race to take sixth. The |team would like to say thank you to the police for their support, the spectators for their enthusiasm and most particularly Cable & Wireless for making this race possible, we hope they will continue to sponsor this event.
