Bente Weber memorial Cross-Channel Swim
A beautiful Easter Sunday greeted the 28 swimmers and numerous volunteers that had gathered at Oualie Beach for the annual Nevis To St Kitts Swim. Visiting swimmers from Antigua, St Maarten and Barbados joined the Nevis and St kitts athletes and students from both Ross Vetinary school in SK and the MUA medical school on Nevis.
The water state was relatively calm as the swimmers psyched themselves up for the task ahead, and the Kayak support crews prepped their rescue vessels in readiness. The entrants were all different ages, from last years event winner Malique Williams (Ant) at 16yrs to veteran swimmers like Bob Muroff (USA) at 65 yrs, and as many female as male swimmers. Some very experienced swimmers and some first time channel crossers, some were racing, some were just keen to see if they could do it.
As the wind freshened the slower swimmers started to feel the effects of the waves and currents, but this did not seem to stop St Maartiner Quincy de feber who won convincingly in 1:07:53 and set a new record for the crossing, and he is only 16. Following on his heels was Malique (Ant), just beating out St Kitts Ninian C/Blake and then Reggie Douglas of Nevis.
All the swimmers involved have to be commended for even attempting this feat let alone succeeding, so a huge round of applause greeting the finishers as they set foot on the shores of St Kitts and hearty congratulations to them all.
