Nevis 10km/5km Run Race
Sunday morning 13th February 21 athletes lined up outside the Oualie Beach hotel for the first run race of 2005, originally supposed to occur in St Kitts, the event shifted over to Nevis under the auspices of the Nevis Cycle club, who are encouraging potential triathletes to gear up for March 12th.Perfect running weather set the tone of the event, with 9 racers contesting the 5km and 11 in the 10km, with a wide range of ages the oldest being 66( Dave Armentrout) and the youngest a mere 10 yrs old (Cyril Dutil), male and female, novice and experienced, all came to find out how far along in their preperation they were. The course started and finished at Oualie up to the airport and back, twice for the 10km runners.
The 5km race was won convincingly by Miranda Fellows(Nev)in a ctime of 21.59, Miranda last competed here two years ago, she has been away for two years completing her doctorate, had a baby and still remains in great shape. second was Alex Isles of Newcastle (Nev) in 24.21, folowed by the youngest competitor in the race 10 yr old Cyril Dutil who finished barefoot in a time of 25.07, a fabulous effort and a star of the future for sure. The 10km race was a hard fought rce with athletes sharing the same halfway split of 19.53 the race was definately on, veteran competitor Jessie Mulcaire (Nev) was setting the early pace and using his experience to put the others under pressure and off their stride. Reggie douglas(Nev) and young Shirvon Greene(Nev) were jessies main protagonists at this point, with james Weekes and Royston Stevens(SK) in there fighting. as they headed back for the finish the race took on a different character as reggie and Shirvon took the race tro Jessie and started to put a little distance between them and the other two contenders. Theyfinally overhauled Jessie and it became a two man race right up untill the sprint finish where the long legs and fighting spirit of Shirvon held off reggie by 4 tenths of a second to take a well deserved win in a time of 39.47, James Weekes was third in 40.15 and jessie fourth.
